GREYHOUNDS: FEAR ZAFONIC TAKES THE CROWN

ABOVE: Fear Zafonic has been crowned Greyhound of the Year
1st February 2010

By Jim Austin

FEAR Zafonic, winner of the Birmingham Cup, Racing Post Juvenile and Yarmouth Derby, was last night crowned the 2009 Greyhound of the Year at the GBGB awards ceremony at London’s Hilton Metropole.

Owned by Paul Shaw, Simon Wooder and Kieron Roe and trained by Charlie Lister, Fear Zafonic saw off competition from other category winners to be crowned top dog, it being the fourth time a Lister-trained dog has lifted the sought-after prize.

Category winners: Sprinter Jimmy Lollie, Standard Fear Zafonic, Stayer Lorrys Options, Marathon, Bitch and British-bred Midway Skipper, Hurdler Platinumlancelot, Newcomer Eye Onthe Storm. The Champagne Club can be the winners tonight with two of their syndicated runners expected to dominate the heats of the Coral On TV Marathon at Romford.

Banker of the duo has to be BUBBLY FINBARR (7.43) in the opening qualifier, who has been particularly eye-catching through his late progress in defeat over what is now an inadequate 575m trip. He was a good winner over C&D in November and last week’s Golden Jacket prep trial at Crayford was a smashing effort.

The Paul Young-trained dog is one of three railers, and is certainly the best drawn of them. He can get first run and be in a position to forge ahead before on the second circuit.

BUBBLY BAM BAM (8.14) can complete the Champagne Club double two races later. He needs to stamp his authority on the opening circuit, but flanked by slow-to-go rivals, he should manage that.

The richest race of the day is the Caffreys Sprint Trophy final at Nottingham and ROTAR WING (9.22) is difficult to oppose.  He is in a league of his own on form and David Pruhs’ dog goes from trap one for the third C&D race in a row, and it should see him complete a hat-trick with ease.
