THE BUDGET: MOTORING
DRIVERS were hit again with a shock 2p fuel duty rise in September and further increases of inflation-plus-one penny for each of the following four years.
The RAC said it was “a brutal blow for motorists” and the Freight Transport Association said the increases “could be the death knell for parts of the logistics sector”.
The Chancellor also offered a “bangers for cash” car-scrappage scheme, where owners of vehicles which are at least 10 years old get £2,000 towards the cost of a brand new one.
He hopes to protect jobs and skills in the car industry and reduce carbon emissions by cutting the number of older cars.
