JACK Branning will be shot outside his EastEnders nightclub in one of the soap’s most dramatic storylines ever.

Albert Square bosses are staying tight-lipped as to whether the explosive plot will mean the departure of Scott Maslen, who is one of the soap’s hottest actors.

But they’re hoping it will boost ratings and kill off their biggest rivals in the run-up to the British Soap Awards.

EastEnders was beaten by Coronation Street at the National Television Awards last month.

But bosses are confident that the shooting storyline, which is due to be screened just weeks before the voting lines close, will help them secure victory.

And with Archie Mitchell’s killer about to be revealed in the soap’s first-ever live episode, an EastEnders source has revealed there’s the possibility the two crimes could be linked.

The source told the Daily Star Sunday: “They’ve literally just finished filming the scenes. Viewers will see Jack locking up his nightclub R&R and when he turns round he’ll get shot.

“He will then be seen falling to the floor and viewers will be left wondering whether he lives or dies.

“During his time in the Square he’s made a number of enemies. But it could well be someone from his dodgy past that catches up with him.

“And then there’s his love life. He’s slept with sisters Ronnie and Roxy Mitchell, as well as their cousin Sam. So there’s no reason why it couldn’t be a crime of passion.”

The source added: “There’s also the small matter of Archie Mitchell’s murder. Jack is one of the suspects, so it could be a revenge shooting.

“The nation has been gripped by Archie’s murder. Viewers love a classic whodunnit plot so hopefully the storyline will bring the same amount of excitement and anticipation.

“The scenes will be shown at the end of April, which is great timing for the British Soap Awards.

“It’s the biggest night in the soap calendar and after the disappointment of the National Television Awards, it would be great to clean up.”

Maslen, 38, has become one of the soap world’s most lusted- after actors since he joined the cast as ex-policeman Jack Branning in 2007.

He has an army of female fans and has won a string of awards for sexiest male. An EastEnders spokesman last night declined to comment on our story.

Fans will be able to find out who killed Archie a week on Friday (February 19) in the live episode to mark the soap’s 25th anniversary.
