LEE BYRNE: RUGBY UNION IS HARDER THAN RUGBY LEAGUE

ABOVE: Lee Byrne: Rugby union is harder then rugby league
5th February 2010

By Martin Richards

WALES full-back Lee Byrne has reignited the debate over the relative strengths of both codes by claiming that rugby union is a far harder game to play than rugby league.

“The league players won’t agree, but in union you’ve got more skills, the line-out, the scrums and so on, the kicking, so I’d definitely go for rugby union,” said Byrne (right), who played league with Bridgend Blue Bulls.

When asked whether rugby league was just about running in a straight line, Byrne, 29, said: “No. There’s a lot more than that.

“There’s certain angles you have to hit, but there is more to think about in rugby union.

“I don’t think fitness levels are that much different. League players train themselves to run through brick walls, but union players are probably covering a bit more ground.”

Re: Lee Byrne: Rugby union is harder then rugby league

To be fair, Byrne has played International RU, but summer conference RL... Put him at full back for Wales RL against the Aussies and we'll ask him after 80 mins (and probably 40-50 tackles) which is harder!

Union is a sport of many skills, and league is played a lung bursting pace! LB mentions scrums and line-outs, but as a full back, the position is similar(ish) in both codes, but with more kicking in union.

Both are excellent spectacles played by superb athletes, and all REAL rugby fans know this. But there's still all the cross code banter....
