TRAINER Nicky Henderson added another to his long string of top novice chasers when Mad Max made a winning start to his fencing career at Kempton yesterday.
“He does need a lot of work to get fit and we’ve been held up. I was petrified that on that ground he would make a noise but he only did that on pulling up,” said Henderson.
“He enjoyed himself a bit too much and got a bit tired. He has got all the pace in the world and jumped beautifully. In fairness, hurdles used to get in the way. He doesn’t want two and a half miles – two is ideal – and he’ll head for the Arkle."
"He’ll have one more race – hopefully on better ground.” Stan James cut Mad Max to 20-1 for the Arkle. Micheal Flips was an emphatic winner of the feature williamhill.com Lanzarote Hurdle for trainer Andy Turnell and jockey Nick Scholfield.
“He is young but has stayed well and handled the ground,” said Turnell. “He is in the totesport Trophy (16-1 with the sponsors) and I will also have a look at races like the Coral Cup.”
Paul Nicholls, Ruby Walsh and owner Graham Roach completed a double with The Minack and Fistral Beach but tragically Roach’s Shamari collapsed and died in the stables after the Lanzarote Hurdle.
