2010: MOVIES TO WATCH OUT FOR

ABOVE: Tim Burton's Alice In Wonderland is set to be a hit in 2010
30th December 2009

By Alan Frank

1. Alice in Wonderland

Who better than visionary director Tim Burton the man who gave us Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas, to put his unique spin on the hallowed children’s fantasy classic? Better still, Johnny Depp is on board to play the Mad Hatter.

2. Hairspray 2

The show’s not over until the fat girl sings, and cute and chubby Nikki Blonsky will be bouncing on to cinema screens in the eagerly awaited sequel to the mega-hit comedy musical. Original director Adam Shankman is back in charge.

3. Harry Potter and the DeaTHly Hallows: Part 1

Short but audacious young wizard Daniel Radcliffe gets his wand out again for the latest screen instalment of J K Rowling’s unstoppable money machine, now divided into two parts for bigger profits. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint return as well.

4. Iron Man 2

Lucky Robert Downey Jr… his career seems assured with inevitable sequels to Sherlock Holmes. He’s also reprising his Iron Man act, donning the tin suit to show off his amazing superhero powers as he blasts into comic-strip action with Gwyneth Paltrow.

5. Little Fockers

The sequel strikes back when Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro (whose apparent difficulty in actually getting the jokes adds to the fun), Teri Polo, Dustin Hoffman and Barbra Streisand raise more splendidly low humour as the Fockers prepare for parenthood.

6. A Nightmare on Elm Street

Get ready, it’s Freddy! The pizza-faced supernatural slayer, played by Jackie Earle Haley, returns to raise hairs on the back of your neck and freeze your blood. It just proves that you can slay a killer but you can’t keep him down.

7. Robin Hood

Here’s something you probably thought you’d never see… Russell Crowe in tights. He follows Errol Flynn, Kevin Costner and all the others who buckled their swashes to bring the famed outlaw to life.

8. Shrek Forever After

Now you can see the big green ogre in 3D, but this time he’s not quite so jolly. Poor Shrek’s been tamed by marriage and domesticity until, that is, adventure explodes around him when he’s conned by smooth-talking Rumpelstiltskin…

9. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse

Love is never easy as Kristen Stewart finds out the hard way when she must choose between sexy vegetarian vampire Robert Pattinson and hunky werewolf Taylor Lautner. Millions of Twilight fans will love it.

10. Unstoppable

A classy cast led by Chris “Captain Kirk” Pine and Denzel Washington will stretch your nerves to breaking point in this taut thriller which follows their desperate battle to stop a runaway freight train’s dangerous cargo from wiping out an American city.

11. Wall Street 2: Money Never Sleeps

Oscar-winner Michael Douglas returns as the disgraced corporate raider Gordon Gekko. He’s back determined to beat the global recession in league with young trader Shia LaBeouf. Original director Oliver Stone is back too, so you can put your money on this sequel making another fortune at the box office.

12. The Wolfman

What do you get with a malign full moon? A ravening werewolf, that’s, what. This chilling remake of the 1940 classic sees hairy-faced Benicio Del Toro in the lead role. You can bet he’d scare the pants off all the previous movie wolfmen… and the audience too.
