£53M SUSPECT FACES KO

DAILY STAR SUNDAY
ABOVE: A decision on whether to try £53million Securitas raid suspect Lee Murray could be made within days.
22nd November 2009

A decision on whether to try £53million Securitas raid suspect Lee Murray could be made within days.

A Moroccan judge is about to jet into the UK to examine evidence against him.

He will meet British authorities to decide if there is a strong enough case to put the cagefighter in court in the North African country.

London-born Murray, who was 32 last week, is accused of fleeing to Morocco with £33million from Britain’s biggest ever cash robbery in Tonbridge, Kent, in February 2006.

Alleged mastermind Murray was held in Morocco’s capital Rabat and is sharing a cell with 18 men after six months in solitary.

His Moroccan lawyer Abdellah Benlamhidi last night told the Daily Star Sunday: “We have not seen any documents, no proof, nothing. We do not even know if they have any witnesses.

“I would remind people Lee is innocent until proven guilty.

“Once the judge returns to Morocco, probably in early December, we will know if they have any evidence to proceed with a case against him.” Murray was arrested in 2006 after Britain put in a request for the former champion to stand trial.

He was freed in June this year but was re-arrested.

His lawyer added: “It is unfair Lee has been painted as a monster. He has not been found guilty of any crime.

“It is only because the British made a formal request for him to stand trial that he was re-arrested.

“Otherwise he would be free but would have to stay in Morocco.

“If there is a trial the British authorities will have to accept the outcome – whether he is innocent or guilty.

“Whatever happens, at some point he will be free to go back to England.”

Two weeks ago Murray’s mum Barbara claimed her son would have bought himself out of jail if he had the cash.

The 60-year-old, from Erith, Kent, said: “If he did have £33million he’d have paid off the judges and bought himself out of there. Everything in Morocco works with bribes.”
