DAILY STAR SUNDAY
ABOVE: Deep Purple clears a fence on the way to victory
1st November 2009

By Patrick Weaver

DEEP Purple dug deep to pip Tamarinbleu and Charlie Magern in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby.

There was  a tremendous three-way tussle throughgout the final circuit as the trio pulled right away from Church
Island and Snoopy Loopy.

Deep Purple looked to be travelling best down the far side but it was the 11-year-old Ollie Magern who went clear turning for home, hitting as low as 1-25 in running.

Tamarinbleu and Deep Purple had kept him in their sights, though, and eventually the leader’s age told enabling Deep Purple and Tamarinbleu to pick him off on the run-in.

Winning jockey Paul Moloney said: “He was a good novice last season and is as tough as old boots.

He’d die for you every day of the week.”

Evan Willams is sensibly not tempted to take him back to Cheltenham where he ran so poorly last March.

“He won’t go near Cheltenham as he is a fl at track horse,” said the trainer. “The Peterborough Chase is defi nitely a possibility and we will put him in the King George at Kempton.

“He is very much a Grade Two horse, but I think he deserves another crack at a Grade One.

“There are some nice races in Ireland but the ground will be against him there.”
