THE “will-he-won’t-he?” rumours won’t go away because bike ace Valentino Rossi keeps test-driving the Ferrari F1 car.
He was out again at Catalunya in Barcelona recently and he was fast enough to set tongues wagging again.
Rossi played it all down, even though he lapped within a whisker of record pace. His best time of 1:21.9 was 0.3 seconds off Kimi Raikkonen’s record, set in the same car.
That, if the fi gures are to be believed, is astonishing bearing in mind how little time the Italian has spent in the Ferrari’s cockpit.
“When I could come to F1, I will be too old. There are wonderful drivers there. I’m fine in my world, which is bikes,” said the nine-times world champion, diplomatically.
“This is just a diversion, some fun, and I am grateful to everybody for the opportunity.”
The rumours might have stopped there but the Ferrari F1 boss added fuel to the fire by claiming Rossi would not only be a race winner in their car but also a potential champion. Intriguingly, Rossi’s contract with Yamaha in MotoGP expires at the end of this year.
The only man to ever win world motorcycle and F1 car championships was Britain’s John Surtees. Rossi is known to be fascinated by historical achievements and maybe this is a goal he’d like to match...
