TEA ADS TONIC FOR UNILEVER

ABOVE: Unilever had boosted spending on marketing for PG Tips
5th February 2010

By Daily Star Reporter

PRICE cuts to fight off competition from rivals have helped consumer goods giant Unilever post forecast-busting sales.

The Dove Soap to Pot Noodle maker recorded a better than expected 1.8% rise in fourth-quarter sales. Total sales for 2009 fell 1.7% to £34.5billion and profits fell 6% to £3.4billion.

Prices were cut by 3.1% over the period while spending was boosted on marketing campaigns, including the PG Tips TV ads featuring comedian Johnny Vegas.

Chief executive Paul Polman said: “We expect continued pressure on consumer spending power. Unemployment will continue to stay high and consumer confidence is likely to remain low – 2010 will continue to be tough.”

Keith Bowman of brokers Hargreaves Lansdown said: “The company has delivered a solid if not inspirational performance.”
