CAMERON'S NHS VISION 'TWO-FACED'

ABOVE: Labour has accused David Cameron of being 'two-faced' over NHS
9th February 2010

Labour has sought to throw the general election campaign spotlight on to the "reality" of David Cameron's "rhetoric" on the NHS.

The party launched a personal assault on the Tory leader's avowed commitment to the health service with an online poster depicting him facing two ways.

With the "Camera On" he was committed to the NHS, but with the "Camera Off" he planned to scrap a guarantee for cancer patients to see a specialist within two weeks.

The image came as Labour reaffirmed its guarantee that patients would be able to get cancer test results back within seven days.

The move, costing £180 million a year for the first three years, would be introduced over the course of a five-year parliament.

Labour said it would save 10,000 lives.

The party also launched a website - voteNHS.com - inviting the public to back the idea online in a show of public support.

Labour's election campaign co-ordinator Douglas Alexander signalled the start of a new drive by the party to highlight the "difference between the rhetoric and the reality of David Cameron's Conservatives".

"Today our message is on our cancer guarantees - David Cameron talks about how committed he is to NHS but what he doesn't want people to see are the consequences of his policies.

"Simply put, scrapping targets would mean longer waiting lists."
