TURKEY MOVE FOR MARK HUGHES

ABOVE: Mark Hughes is being lined up by Turkey as their new national team boss
9th February 2010

By Duncan Wright

MARK Hughes is being lined up by Turkey as their new national team boss.

The former Manchester City chief is being targeted to take charge of the team in their qualifying campaign for Euro 2012.

Turkish FA officials were impressed by the job he was doing at Eastlands before his departure last year and see him as an ideal candidate for the role.

Former coach Fatih Terim resigned after he failed to guide the country the World Cup  Finals this summer. And though Russia coach Guus Hiddink and Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni are also in the frame, it is Hughes who is interesting Turkey most.

They believe he was doing a good job as City boss this season and feel he was harshly treated when they sacked him in favour of Roberto Mancini. And they are also impressed by his displays when he was Wales manager.

Hughes has admitted in the past he would like to return to international management, and a deal to take him up to the end of the Euro 2012 campaign would be one which interests him.

Meanwhile, there is a growing feeling within City that the club are no better off with Mancini in charge than when Hughes was there.

The Italian has already lost as many games as Hughes did this season and City have failed to kick on since his arrival. Instead, they have missed several opportunities to take advantage of slip-ups by rivals and hammer home their stake to finish in the top four this season.

While some at Eastlands have been vocal in their praise for the job Mancini has done since his arrival, others are privately pointing out Hughes was making decent progress himself.
