REVIEW: INVICTUS

5th February 2010

By Alan Frank

Invictus (12A)

MOVIE tough guy Clint Eastwood is without a doubt America’s greatest living director.

And once again he proves his superb talent with this inspiring and compelling true story.

Released after 27 years in prison, Nelson Mandela, magnificently portrayed by Oscar nominee Morgan Freeman, faces the apparently insuperable task of uniting a country torn apart by apartheid.

He discovers the scale of the job when he watches South Africa playing an international rugby match and is dismayed to see all the whites cheer for the Springboks and all the blacks cheer for England.

But Mandela persuades white rugby team captain Francois Pienaar (Oscar- nominated Matt Damon) to help heal the divide by leading the team to glory in the 1995 World Cup.

Eastwood’s perfect direction makes the movie utterly enthralling, even if you you aren’t interested in history or rugby.

Damon tries hard and scores while Freeman is outstanding in this unmissable drama.
