ONLINE ROUTE TO SLASH BILLS

ABOVE: Keep cosy but watch the cost of fuel during the current cold weather
12th January 2010

EVEN though energy suppliers have cut their prices in the last few months we’re not likely to see much difference in our bills.

That’s because amid the coldest snap for 30 years bills are sure to soar as we crank up the heating.

Despite the cuts, we’re paying almost £330 a year more for energy than two years ago with the average household heating bill nudging £520.

Comparison site uSwitch.com reckons we’ll be disappointed if we expect the price cuts to make a dent in our energy payments.

But opt for an online energy deal and you could be quids in.

Will Marples of uSwitch.com said: “These plans cost about £300 LESS than standard plans.

“So by switching to online you could take your bills back to levels last seen in January 2008. With only one in 20 of us on online plans the scope for others to join and save money is huge.

“Rather than sitting back and hoping for more reductions we can give ourselves a substantial cut on our energy bills today.

“Moving to dual-fuel, paying by direct debit and joining an online plan will all help save money.”

Last year we saved an amazing £900million just by switching energy tariffs, with more than five million homes benefiting.

Price comparison and switching site energyhelpline.com says the average saving was £180.

“But some have saved over £400,” said Paul Green of the site.

“Millions of us have been disillusioned by the paltry energy price drops but you can do something about it by changing your supplier.”
